TPL Reading Challenge: January Book Review

Childhood can lead to an individual’s self-discovery. In Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, Woodson writes about growing up in the North and South in the 1960s and 70s. She recounts her memories by presenting her novel in poetic prose. Throughout the story, Jacqueline developed a love for writing. From the moment that she first received a composition book, to the moment she wrote the first letter in her name, the writing was a passion. Using what she learned from her childhood living with race and religion in the North and South, Woodson discovers her identity by writing stories about her childhood. By writing about what she remembers as a child and making up stories, Woodson is building her “extended mind” which helps her become a better writer. She also uses writing as an escape and a way for her to develop an identity. Even though this is a book that I wouldn’t usually read, I really enjoyed it!! It was entertaining and engaging!!! I would probably read something from this author again.
